About The artist
Sarah Von Dreele is an American artist, product designer and creative director. Classically trained in graphic design and typography at Rhode Island School of Design, with no formal education in painting, she decided to pick up a paint brush for the first time one evening in 2016. While her initial intent was to use painting as a personal outlet, the process of creating became a driving force in the trajectory of her career. She quickly discovered the potential for painting as a vehicle to create a quiet space from an emotionally traumatic experience. Through the meditative nature of making, she found herself safely contained in stillness, allowing her to process and evolve. This iterative and reflective act eventually resulted in a body of work which was foundational for the launch of the Sarah Von Dreele brand.
Produced in New England, all of her wallpaper and fabric designs begin as works on paper, hand-painted exclusively in gouache. She then translates these dreamlike works into her product collections, further exploring a moment, thought or relationship. Her designs stand as artifacts that retain and honor collective experiences while exploring color, form, and cadence. She finds inspiration in unique color relationships and their ability to evoke emotion, memory, and connection. Von Dreele’s abstracted floral and geometric forms lend themselves to a variety of applications for the curated home.
Upon her debut at ICFF 2019, Sarah was named a “trend-setting designer” by Interior Design Magazine, and one of Architectural Digest PRO’s “21 Favorite furnishings” from the show. She has been named an Interior Design Magazine Best of Year Awards 2023 Winner and NYCxDesign Awards honoree for her eponymous line of wallpapers and fabrics.
Sarah Von Dreele’s line of bespoke wallpapers, textiles, and fine art originals are available to the trade, and the collection is represented by trade showrooms throughout North America. In addition to her own product lines, Sarah continues to develop home accessories and fine art reproductions with CB2.
Sarah received a BFA in Graphic Design from Rhode Island School of Design in 1997. Between developing new products, painting what she sees, and keeping up with her ‘tween, she patiently pursues her interest in learning the French language. After twenty-one years in New York City, Sarah now lives and paints in the Northwestern Connecticut countryside and her seaside cottage on a barrier island in New Jersey.
Sarah welcomes commissions, partnerships, and collaborations which extend the hand-painted designs to bespoke interiors and consumer products.
